Domaine Fournier Pouilly-Fume ‘Les Caaillottes’ 2007
Pouilly-Fume(Poo’-eey Foo-may’) is a delightful white wine produced with Sauvignon Blanc near the village of Pouilly-sur-Loire in the Loire region. This wine has nothing to do or in common with Pouilly-Fuisse, which is made with Chardonnay in Burgundy. The word ‘fume’ means ‘smoke’ in French, and you’ll often notice a smoky element in these wines, said to be derived from the soil which is mostly flint. The Fournier family brings over 10 generations of wine making experience to this wine. Aromas of lemon, citrus peel and flint fill the glass, while in the mouth you will sense a elegant, well-rounded wine showing smooth minerality with flavors of citrus, honeydew melon and a subtle smoky essence. All of which lingers with you as you enjoy a glass with our trout or other fish specials.

Bourgeois Family Cuvée Stéphi 2007
I thought it would be interesting to run another wine from the Roussillon region on the heels of the Château de Calodroy. Though this wine is officially a Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes, it is regardless another delightful red wine from a region not often visited by wine lists. This blend of Grenache(65%) and Syrah(35%) is grown on a barren chalky-clay, granite, and schistes soil, which gives the grapes plenty of character and depth. Big aromas of blackberry, cocoa powder, roasted meat and herbal notes are also reprised in the mouth along with solid tannins, a smooth spiciness, a rounded minerality and an almost creamy-like texture, but all of this is nicely balanced. This is another terrific example of the many value wines coming from the south of France.

Château de Caladroy Côtes du Roussillon Villages 2005
From out of the rugged hills that comprise the French Catalonia area, within the Roussillon (Roo-see-yawn) region, comes a hearty and delicious red wine. Only red wines are granted the AOC of Cotes du Roussillon Villages, an AOC since 1977. Blended with Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre, all grown in the shadows of the Pyrenees. ‘Les Schistes’, the name given to this wine because of the barren, stony soil of the vineyard, displays pronounced aromas of blackberry preserve, shrubby herbal notes, along with an almost sea breeze-like quality. Full-bodied, well-structured, and with enough acidity to give brightness to the dark fruit, herbal and schist flavors
